Introduction

Every year, the English Department of Seinan Jo Gakuin University hold the Zion English Speech Contest for our 1st and 2nd Year students. The aims of this contest are to:

  • encourage our students to write clearly, logically, and informatively on a topic of their choice
  • develop their oral English skills, with a particular focus on pronunciation, pace, and delivery
  • assist them to become more confident in their English communication skills

In the first semester, 1st-year students select topics and begin writing under the supervision of their Oral English teachers. Once writing is complete, the students practice, then submit a copy of their speech plus a cassette tape to their teachers. They then perform their speeches in front of their classes, after which two finalists are chosen. Second-year students follow a similar cycle in their Discussion classes, though in their case, participation is voluntary (though encouraged!)

During the summer vacation, the finalists practice their speeches in preparation for the Zion English Speech Contest. This is held during the school's Culture Festival in November. Winners are selected by a panel of judges, and are awarded prizes and a trophy.

Please join us at this year's final, to be held on Saturday, October 18 from 1:00 p.m. in Room 6206.
